Accident at work results in woman's hip replacement

Thousands in compensation for a woman who suffered a severe fracture to the hip after she slipped on some oil whilst at work.

44 year old Sandra worked as an Administrator within a factory setting. She was asked one day at work to take a message to another employee on the warehouse floor.

As she was walking across the warehouse, she slipped on some oil that had been spilled and not cleaned up, landing very heavily on her right hip and causing a severe fracture.

She was unable to move until another member of staff noticed her lying in pain and rang for an ambulance.

A scan was carried out at the hospital which showed that the hip was not being supplied with blood and that she would need a total hip replacement. She was unable to return to work for a long time and the ordeal has left her with a very bad limp.

Her employers admitted full responsibility for the accident. However, their insurers initially made a very low offer of £65,000.

Potter Rees Dolan was able to argue for a much higher amount and settled for a significantly improved offer of £190,000. This figure reflects the risk of future surgery, rehabilitation and some adaptations to Sandra’s home.

Helen Shaw acted for Sandra and commented:

In this case, following the transfer of the instructions to Potter Rees Dolan, we were able to persuade the Insurers and their Solicitors to adopt a co-operative and pragmatic approach, for rehabilitation purposes, which proved to be of particular benefit to Sandra.
