Gary Herbert

Gary is a Partner within our Personal Injury team and has dealt extensively with clients who have sustained life changing catastrophic injuries for 18 years.

Education & career

Gary studied Law at Sheffield University, graduating in 1999 before completing his LPC in 2000. He started pursuing compensation claims for accident victims with brain injuries during his time as a trainee, and has specialised in this work ever since qualifying as a solicitor in 2002. What inspired Gary's career in law?

I have always been interested in arguing on behalf of those unable to argue for themselves.  To me this remains the most rewarding part of the job – making the law work to help innocent victims of accidents improve their lives in the real world.

Gary joined Potter Rees Dolan's Personal Injury team in 2015 and was promoted to Partner in 2017, specialising in acting for children and adults who have sustained traumatic brain injuries. He has acted for clients with all types of brain injuries – from those able to return to supported work to those who have been left in minimally conscious states - and has acted in a number of cases where therapy and substantial compensation has been secured, even when earlier medical investigations were inconclusive.

Chambers 2022 says:

"Gary is a very determined fighter for his clients" and "He demonstrated great knowledge and empathy for our needs as a family."

Gary is passionate about the importance of the early provision of effective rehabilitation as this is far more important for our clients than the sum of money they receive at the end. Gary says:

It is a real privilege to play a role in the rehabilitation journey of our clients.  We usually meet our clients and their families at the lowest point of their lives and work with dedicated and determined rehabilitation professionals to help put together a new life for themselves after their injuries. The feeling when we have managed to get the right team in place for our clients and see them engage and progress is great.

Special cases

The most interesting claim involved a client who was shot in Pristina following the liberation of Kosovo.  Aside from the interesting mix of foreign, military and civil law, to see a High Court Judge holding an army SA-80 assault rifle and an AK47 and aim them at cars in the Court car park was something to behold.

Professional memberships & charity work

Gary is currently serving on the committee for Headway Salford and Trafford, having previously volunteered for Headway Leeds and the Manchester branch of the Child Brain Injury Trust. Gary is also recognised by Chambers and Legal 500.

Outside of work...

Outside of the office, Gary is a keen snowboarder, frustrated footballer and self confessed rugby bore! Although in recent years, chasing after his two young children has taken up most of his time and energy!
