Amputee PC calls for tougher sentences for dangerous drivers

A police officer who suffered life changing injuries after he was knocked down by a drink driver is now calling for tougher sentences for offenders.

Tom Dorman, a PC for Thames Valley Police, was on a routine patrol with a colleague at the time of the collision. The police officers had just pulled over a taxi when they were struck by another vehicle.

PC Dorman underwent ten hours of surgery to save his life and required below the knee amputation following the incident, which took place in Maidenhead in September 2018.

In December 2019, a jury heard how Hayden Brown, 25, had consumed alcohol and drugs before getting behind the wheel of his vehicle. He was found guilty of three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and sentenced to five years in prison, the maximum sentence for such an offence.

PC Dorman says the sentence is nowhere near long enough.

In a statement the Ministry of Justice said it already has plans to introduce life sentences for people who cause death by dangerous driving - at the moment the maximum penalty for this is 14 years - but PC Dorman is campaigning for a wider reform.
