The dangers of the recycling industry is something we have covered frequently in recent years; particularly due to the fact we are representing a man who lost his hand following an accident working in a recyclingfactory.

Philip Grace, a 43-year-old father of a young son, was injured whilst working at Recresco Ltd, a glass recycling plant in Ellesmere Port.

As Philip was working under the conveyor belt, his right hand snagged in the belt and it was pulled into a tail roller, causing his hand to be severed.

He was taken to hospital but unfortunately medics were unable to re-attach his severed limb.

He has been left with his right arm amputated below the elbow and he has been provided with a state of the art myoelectric prosthesis, a range of other prosthetic equipment and a full rehabilitation package funded privately through his claim which is ongoing.

Recresco pleaded guilty to breaching the Health and Safety regulations and were fined.

Today we have heard of yet another horrific accident involving an employee suffering an injury to his arm at a recycling centre.

It is understood that this employee, similar to our client, was working on the conveyor belt when his arm was caught in the machinery and he was rushed to hospital.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the police are investigating how the accident occurred.

Richard Edwards, senior personal injury solicitor at Potter Rees Dolan, said:

It is distressing to hear that a similar accident with similarly devastating consequences has occurred, once again in the recycling industry. I hope that the man concerned and his family receive all the care and support they need in the months and years ahead.

I hope also that the HSE move swiftly to conclude their investigation and will fully consider the wider implications of this awful accident for the recycling industry which continues to struggle with a very poor safety record.

Richard is Group Secretary of ACSIL the Amputation Charity and has dealt with many clients who have had a limb amputated. He also appeared on Radio 5 Live where he commented on the dangers of the recycling industry.
