Calvert Reconnections: A home from home for ABI survivors

In September this year, the doors are set to open to a brand-new neuro-rehabilitation specialist residential centre based in the Lake District.

Calvert Reconnections will provide innovative rehabilitation programs for people who are recovering from acquired brain injuries, combining traditional clinical therapies with physical outdoor activity. The centre’s focus on outdoor activities also means that it is the UK’s first Covid-19 compliant brain injury rehabilitation program.

Based on the outskirts of Keswick in the Lake District, Calvert Reconnections is run by the Lake District Calvert Trust - a charity which aims to enable people with disabilities to benefit from outdoor activities in the countryside. The new centre will provide a wide range of outdoor activities in which social distancing can be incorporated, including fell walking, horse riding, fishing, gardening, orienteering, sailing and more.

Furthermore, the centre’s residential and communal facilities - located within a Grade II listed Tithebarn and one-time home of Lakeland’s most famous of poets, William Wordsworth - are “fully compliant with COVID-19 guidelines while newly developed services include post lockdown respite and post COVID-19 step down rehabilitation”.

The property itself has undergone a ‘sensitive transformation’ and is now a friendly and inviting home from home for up to 10 individuals.

A highly experienced consultant neurologist and consultant in rehabilitation medicine, over the last 30 years, Professor Mike Barnes has been dedicated to the development of neurological rehabilitation throughout the UK and internationally.

He believes rehabilitation provision has been driven to crisis point by Covid-19 with services faced disruption and closure due to social distancing, shielding requirements, lack of specialist support and funding.

"The world has changed over the last three months, but rehab can’t wait - we are at crisis point already," said Professor Barnes.
"This ground-breaking new programme, combining traditional interdisciplinary clinical therapies with physical activity in the outdoors, will put the UK at the forefront of brain injury rehabilitation on a global scale."
