Crash wreckage displayed in campaign for tougher sentencing

The wreckage of the car crash which killed a young man was displayed in public today.

Joseph Brown-Lartey was killed instantly when his car, which was hit with such force by a speeding vehicle, split into two.

As part of a campaign for tougher sentences against dangerous drivers, his car was taken to Westminster today to show the public the devastation.

The road safety charity Brake joined Joseph's family, MPs who are supporting the cause and other bereaved families in London.

A petition calling for change, which contained more than 20,000 signatures, was handed in previously.

The driver who killed Joseph, Addil Haroon, was sentenced to six years but is only likely to serve three of those.

Amber Mitchell, personal injury solicitor at PotterReesDolan, deals with a lot of road traffic accident claims. She said:

Joseph’s death is a particularly tragic and shocking example of what can happen when motorists fail to truly appreciate or care that they are in control of a potentially deadly weapon and that, contrary to what they may think, they can and will lose control of that weapon if they do not drive with due care.

I hope the Justice for Joseph campaign is successful in resulting in, not just harsher sentencing for dangerous drivers, but also in raising more awareness for all drivers as to what could happen if they do not drive safely the next time and every time they get behind the wheel.

Joseph's family are urging the government to impose stricter sentences for road crimes and hope seeing the wreckage of their son's car will shock the public and emphasize the importance of their campaign.
