I was very interested to read the recent BBC article commenting on recent data which suggested that GP out-of-hours services provided by commercial companies perform slightly worse than NHS or not-for-profit equivalents.
The data was collated for research conducted by the Exeter Medical School and resulted in scores out of 100 for the three types of providers. The NHS came top with a score of 73 out of 100 followed by not-for-profit organisations with a score of 72 out of 100 and commercial organisations came last with a score of 69 out of 100.
The scores were all based on GP patient survey data meaning they reflect patient’s views and opinions of the different organisations rather than any performance statistics.
It is always interesting to see how different organisations are viewed by those who use them, the patients, and here at PotterReesDolan we were happy to see that the basis of this research was patient opinion.
Often the views and experiences of patients seem to be placed lower than meeting targets with healthcare services so a report of this nature is always positive and supports the same position as us, patient power.
