A new series of the award-winning BBC programme Hospital launched which showcases the day-to-day life of six hospitals across Liverpool.
Last week's episode focused on the Walton Centre which is the UK's only dedicated spine, brain and pain management centre and sits adjacent to the major trauma hospital, Aintree University Hospital.
Every patient at Aintree with a brain injury is taken to the Walton Centre which has seen a 20 per cent increase in the last five years.
The episode showed a number of patients who had been admitted to the Walton Centre with varying types of brain injury. One patient was 18-year-old Tom who sustained a brain injury during a car accident. Although he looks physically well, he now struggles to remember even the simplest things but doesn't think there is anything wrong with him anymore and repeatedly tries to leave during the episode.
After staying in the Walton Centre for two months, he has to wait until rehabilitation specialist support is available so he can recover further.
Jeanne Evans, Partner at Potter Rees Dolan, acts for clients like Tom. She said:
I've just watched this week's episode of Hospital following the neurological team at the Walton Centre, treating the patients whose lives they save and change for the better with such incredible skill, kindness and empathy.
It is fantastic to have such a centre of excellence in our area. I am privileged to be able to offer some support to those in our local community through my role with Headway Liverpool – we provide a monthly drop in offering social opportunities and support to those who have suffered a brain injury, their families and friends. You can see our current flyer and our upcoming events here – do get in touch if we can help.
