Dozens of babies and mothers died or seriously injured at hospital

Over 60 babies and mothers are thought to have died or suffered serious injury at a maternity unit already under investigation.

Cases of poor care include babies dying, brain injuries to babies and deaths of the mothers were found at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust.

Senior midwife, Donna Ockenden, was appointed last year to review 23 cases of alleged poor maternity care at the hospitals.

Since then, a separate review found 40 more cases as more families have come forward with concerns, some from almost 20 years ago.

A mother and two babies died in unrelated incidents in December 2017 which are thought to be the latest maternity deaths at the hospital.

Both the number of potentially avoidable deaths and serious injuries, and the fact that some of the allegations date back almost 20 years, raise serious cause for concern. It is now crucial that all of these cases are investigated properly and that The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust is fully committed to learning from these incidents to avoid future tragedies.
