APIL: Drivers need to be more aware of horse riders on the road

Drivers are urged to be more aware of horse riders on the road in light of Road Safety Week.
APIL, a national not-for-profit organisation for lawyers, is calling for more awareness after handling personal injury claims from accidents involving horse riders and motorists.
The number of injuries to horse riders and motorists is approximately 225 a year and is unfortunately not decreasing.
APIL is not only asking for drivers to be more aware but also encouraging riding schools to include road safety in lessons to their students.
The British Horse Society (BHS) have said divers should leave at least a car's width when overtaking at a speed of no more than 15-20mph.
We previously commented on a video published to show drivers how to overtake cyclists properly and the same principles can be used here with horses.
Helen Shaw, Senior Litigation Manager at PotterReesDolan, said:
I share the advice given by APIL. For the sake of literally minutes to ensure the safety of horse and rider, it is so important to look ahead and give yourself enough time to slow down and wait until it is safe to pass with care.
The BHS also commented how, if there isn't enough room, to remain a car length back and wait until you can see it is safe to pass, even if the rider signals to overtake as they can't make that judgement on your behalf.
APIL shared the story of David who suffered injuries to his neck and shoulder when he fell off his horse when its legs collided with a vehicle.
He said how, even though drivers need to be cautious of horse riders, riders should also wear high-visibility clothing and wear a helmet.
