Earlier today, LimbPower, an organisation which encourages amputees to engage in sport, gave an insightful talk to members of ACSIL the amputation charity.
Andy Brittles, national sports development office for LimbPower, spoke to amputee members of the Liverpool group about why sport is so important.
LimbPower conducted a recent survey among amputees and found 83% of them would like to take part in more sport and physical activity in the future.
Participation in sport among people with a disability is increasing but Andy said how there are multiple barriers preventing those with limb impairments from taking part.
The physical barriers for disabled people include a lack of accessible equipment and facilities; with some being refused to access a gym.
Psychological barriers also pose a problem for amputees as they may have a lack of confidence preventing them from taking part and interacting with others.
However, Andy explained how amputees are able to access sport and physical activity in a relaxed and friendly environment.
Richard Edwards, senior personal injury solicitor at Potter Rees Dolan is also group secretary at ACSIL and said:
It was a great talk today; the benefits of keeping active for all, but especially amputees, cannot be overstated. We’re looking forward to helping amputees on Merseyside to get active!
