Increase in injuries at trampoline parks calls for regulations

The numbers of children suffering injuries on trampolines is increasing according to ambulance statistics.

In 2017, an ambulance was called out to 1,181 incidents at trampoline parks in England which equates to more than three every day.

The severity of the injuries are worsening especially at public trampoline parks which are becoming very popular across the country.

One hospital's audit found children hurt at such parks required more treatment than those injured on home equipment.

The increase in injury has caused industry bodies to consider regulation of the sector as there are currently no safety regulations specifically aimed at trampoline parks.

Potter Rees Dolan, serious injury solicitors, have dealt with similar cases and said:

Trampolining is an activity which can give a great deal of enjoyment to children and adults alike and is great for general fitness and developing co-ordination. However, I believe it is also one of the most dangerous sports and it is essential for organisers to educate, instruct and supervise participants (particularly children) who will be unaware of the risks, and ensure proper equipment is used at all times under proper supervision.

We have conducted cases for children and adults over the years who suffered catastrophic injuries due to failures by organisers and supervisors to provide for their reasonable safety resulting in huge awards of damages and consequent life changing injuries affecting them and their families.

There are guidelines to be followed published by British Gymnastics and the RSPA but there should also be enforceable regulations to ensure the activity is conducted in a safe environment with minimum risk to members of the public.
