Issue of seatbelt safety in children highlighted by coroner

A coroner has urged for all parents to ensure their children are properly strapped into cars with a seatbelt after a six-year-old girl has died.

An inquest heard how Aleeza Ahmed was thrown from a car near the M60 when she was sat on a booster seat without a seatbelt.

This accident not only highlighted the issue of seatbelt safety (which recently marked 50 years) but also safety improvements at the busy Stockport junction.

The coroner intends to write to Stockport Council requesting crash barriers between the two carriageways on the road. Members of the public have also claimed to have lost control on the stretch of road where the accident happened.

Although the road itself may be a notorious junction for car crashes, the inquest heard how a contributor to the severity of her injuries undoubtedly came from the fact that she was not properly belted in.

Amber Mitchell, personal injury solicitor at PotterReesDolan, said:

Aleeza’s tragic death brings home the importance, not only of motorists and their passengers to use their seat belts, but also the steps Councils can take in considering road layouts and other factors which may be creating an incident black spot and whether there is anything they should be doing to make the road safe. I hope the action taken by Stockport Council will be enough to prevent further injuries and loss of life at this location.
