The son of a man who sustained a brain injury after being knocked from his bicycle is campaigning for changes on the local roads to make cycling safer.
Joshua Brandwood started campaigning for a protected cycle lane after his father, Mark Bryan, was hit by a HGV whilst on his way to work.
As a result of the accident, Mr Bryan sustained catastrophic injuries and now needs round the clock care due to the brain injury he suffered.
Specifically targeting the old stretch of the Bay Gateway that connects Lancaster, Morecambe and Heysham, Joshua is urging local residents to have their say in a consultation to implement a cycle lane.
Lancashire County Council have put into place Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans in order to confront the issue, after a petition was signed by more than 2,500 people.
With more and more people choosing to walk and cycle for everyday journeys, the Council says there is a real need to provide better options for vulnerable road users and it aims to improve walking and cycling.
Hugh Potter, Senior Partner and Head of Personal Injury at Potter Rees Dolan, said:
Plans by Lancashire County Council to provide cycle lanes and protect cyclists are great. Manchester has its own plans of course. Speedy implementation must follow as tragic brain injuries aren’t prevented by best wishes! Local authorities should be in no doubt of the need to implement, particularly following the new Highway Code.
