Millions of motorists driving whilst using mobile phones

Shocking figures were published today on how millions of motorists are illegally using their mobile phone whilst behind the wheel.

The RAC's Report on Motoring 2016 found an estimated 11 million motorists admitted to making or receiving a call in the last 12 months with five million taking a photo or video behind the wheel of a moving vehicle.

Attitudes towards mobile use has become 'worryingly relaxed' in recent years with more drivers admitting to being on the phone.

Anne Moment, personal injury solicitor at PotterReesDolan, said:

It is staggering that so many people continue to use mobile phones when driving, especially given the number of high profile accidents which have been reported and their devastating consequences.

All calls, messages and social media interaction can and must wait for the safety of everyone. Perhaps if the penalties were higher people would be more inclined to take account of the law.

Scientists found that motorists are so distracted by calls and messages that they drive as dangerously as those who are over the legal alcohol limit.Tougher deterrents are being called for which campaigners and grieving families hope will save hundreds of lives after 200 Britons have been killed by a distracted driver in the past ten years.

Although the road safety charity Brake has called for an increase of the minimum fine for drivers found using mobile phones, the RAC wants even tougher penalties put in place.

Below is a table which shows the findings from the Report on Motoring 2016 by the RAC:
