We welcome the fact that steps are being put in place to better protect patients who choose to undergo cosmetic surgery. Cosmetic surgery is becoming more and more common place and there are many practitioners in the marketplace, not all of whom are as qualified as others but who, perhaps, offer what appears to be a reasonable price for the surgery required.
Those wishing to have cosmetic surgery can be vulnerable individuals who risk being encouraged into sometimes inappropriate surgery by someone who does not have the right level of experience to perform the same and so therefore safety in cosmetic surgery is vital.
From next spring (2016), surgeons will be able to apply for ‘certification’ to show they are qualified and competent to perform specific procedures. It will enable surgeons to demonstrate they have the right standards of training and experience to carry out cosmetic surgery.
This can only be a good thing in an insufficiently regulated “industry” that is at risk of causing damage to individuals who might not have the time, money or inclination to ensure that they are being treated by an appropriately qualified surgeon.
