New ratings into maternity care show poor performances

Maternity services in three quarters of NHS areas are failing according to new Oftsed-style rankings released this week.
The results, which are available to view on My NHS, show the clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) which are in need of improvement throughout the UK.
Based on stillbirth rates and neonatal mortality, the ratings also examined the women's experience of the maternity services and whether they had a choice of hospital.
According to Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt, the new rankings are an effort to improve our place in the rating table as the UK has higher rates if stillbirth than Poland, Croatia and Estonia.
The ratings shows where the CCGs need to make improvements and so the areas which perform poorly will need special attention.
The number of clinical negligence claims for mistakes made during childbirth have also tripled in the last ten years.
