The hospital trust for north Lancashire and south Cumbria has been placed into special measures for a second time.

NHS England has confirmed that the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, which runs hospitals in three areas - Lancaster, Barrow and Kendal, has been entered into its Recovery Support Programme, with a review of the trust’s urology department now ongoing.

According to NHS England, health trusts are placed on the recovery programme when there are 'very serious and complex issues that require intensive support'.

The University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust was previously placed into special measures following an inquiry into failings at its maternity unit after the unnecessary deaths of 11 babies and one mother between 2004 and 2013.

Just recently, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) said its report into University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust makes for “disappointing reading”, with the overall trust rated as ‘requires improvement’ by the CQC.

Aaron Cummins, Chief Executive of the trust, said: “We are committed to providing the best quality care to our patients, including recovering from the additional challenges COVID-19 has posed.

“The Recovery Support Programme provides an opportunity for us all to work together across Morecambe Bay to build better and more sustainable services for those patients for the future.”

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the NHS in the North West said the enrolment will "provide a system-focused approach" for supporting challenges within the trust.

We hope that any patients who are pursuing damages and redress for injury suffered due to the poor services at the Trust are offered speedy apologies and resolutions of their claims.
