As part of our ‘Featured Charity’ campaign, Potter Rees Dolan is supporting small charities and the work that they do across the nation. Today we learn more about Activity Alliance and all that they’re doing to make active lives possible.
Challenging perceptions and changing the reality of disability, inclusion and sport
Founded in September 1998 as The English Federation of Disability Sport, the charity was established as an umbrella body responsible for coordinating the development of sport and physical activity for disabled people in England. In April 2018, the charity began operating with a new name, Activity Alliance. They are the same team working towards the same goals, but with a new image.
We work with so many amazing people and are at the centre of influential world-renowned programmes for disabled people. We believe the time is right for us to embrace change, engage new audiences and ensure our brand promise matches our ambition.
Activity Alliance enables organisations to support disabled people to be and stay active for life. The national charity looks to a better future where everyone can enjoy the opportunities available. With a strong desire to improve quality of life and the health and well-being of all disabled people, the vision of Activity Alliance is that disabled people are active for life.
Headquartered in Loughborough and with a second office in Manchester, the charity has strong links to local communities with a team of Engagement Advisors working remotely across England.
They enable organisations to support individual disabled people to be active and stay active for life. Activity Alliance works closely with many organisations, including Sport England, the National Disability Sports Organisations and National Governing Bodies (NGBs) of sport. As well as working with regional coaching and education networks, including the County Sports Partnerships, clubs and schools.
We see two broad outcomes which will result from increased participation in sport and physical activity by disabled people:
1. Enhanced health and wellbeing for all disabled people
2. A more equal society in which disabled people can achieve more through increased opportunities and choice
Me, Being Active
In 2017, Activity Alliance recognised Sunday 3rd December as International Day for Disabled People with the release of a new collection of Me, Being Active films. Meet Anoushé, Evie, Richard, Sam, Shona, Tesfai and Zack. They are seven disabled people with a range of impairments and long-term health conditions, who all lead active lives. In their own words, each individual shares their personal story. They talk about how they first became active and explain the way it makes them feel.
You can watch the video series here: Me, Being Active playlist on YouTube and below.
