Paralysed man walks again thanks to bionic exoskeleton

A paralysed man has taken his first steps in four years with the help of a bionic exoskeleton.

Abdul Aldhfeiry from Cardiff, who broke his neck in a car accident in 2012, used the £100,000 technology to walk 119 steps in three minutes.

The bionic legs, made by Ekso Bionics in the United States, have reactors to the body's movements which enable the user to walk.

There are two motors at the hips, two at the knees, the ankles are spring-loaded and there are sensors on the feet and is powered by a back-pack battery.

Eventually, the equipment will be developed by using the person's own muscles to help them walk by using electrodes.

It is hoped that more research and funding into this type of technology will enable more people with a spinal cord injury to walk again.
