I approach this recall of neurology patients in Northern Ireland with mixed feelings. One the one hand it is great to see that the Trust involved has taken a pro-active approach and is reviewing all patients to ensure that their diagnosis and treatment is correct and appropriate.
However, on the other hand, it is gravely concerning to read that 2,500 patients under the care of one particular consultant may have been misdiagnosed.
Neurology focuses on disorders of the brain and is a key element of care for a high number of our clients who have suffered brain injury.
From our experience, we know that appropriate diagnosis and treatment in a timely manner can have a positive impact on people’s recovery and quality of life. It is therefore a real concern that patients in their thousands may have been denied appropriate care due to errors.
I hope all those effected are seen quickly so that they don’t have to endure a long time worrying if something has been missed on top of everything else they have been through.
