A study by IAM has found that 70% of people would like to see the legal drink-drive limit reduced.

The survey comes after new rules were implemented in Scotland where the legal alcohol limit was reduced from 80 milligrams to 50 milligrams of alcohol in 100ml of blood.

Police in Scotland confirmed they saw a reduction in the number of drivers prosecuted for being under the influence over the festive period compared to the previous year.

According to the research, people also support a festive focus to drink driving with police prioritising seasonal drink-drive campaigns.

Almost half of those surveyed would like the police to have more power by being able to stop any driver and request a breath test.

Gary Herbert, Senior Solicitor at PotterReesDolan, said:

As a solicitor, I so often see the victims of accidents caused by drink driving and the effect on them and their families is frequently life-changing. Through the fault of another, they can be left confronting lifelong challenges against physical injuries or the effects of a head injury.

It is pleasing to see the strength of public feeling about drink driving. Stopping people driving with any alcohol in their system is clearly helpful and the change to stop people driving whilst affected by alcohol to any degree would be very welcome.
