Road traffic injuries are highest killer of teenagers around world

Road injuries are the biggest killer of teenagers globally, according to new statistics from World Health Organisation.

The figures show road collisions accounted for 10% of the 1.2 million deaths of 10-19 year-olds in 2015 around the world.

Of the 3,166 deaths and serious injuries in the UK alone, 145 of those were due to road traffic accidents.

Hugh Potter, specialist personal injury solicitor at PotterReesDolan, said:

The clear evidence is that children and young people – surprisingly to their mid teens – are unable to properly assess speeds of approaching vehicles. This makes them particularly vulnerable when crossing roads as is shown by these statistics and cases such as Melissa's.

Road safety charity DriveSafe and StaySafe is calling for road safety education to be part of the national curriculum in schools as well as more awareness campaigns from the government to remind about the dangers of the roads.

As well as Hugh's case of Melissa where a settlement of £13 million was agreed, have a look at some of the other personal injury case studies which include many that involve road traffic accidents.
