A scientist mother claims hospital failures caused her son's brain damage after they ignored her advice.

The 11-year-old developed a complication following a routine operation at Great Ormond Street and was he was later taken to a local hospital.

The resuscitation team managed to restart her son's heart 45 minutes later but he suffered a serious brain injury after being starved of oxygen for so long meaning he can no longer walk or talk.

He then went into cardiac arrest which his mother claims was due to a blood thinner he was given under the instruction of the world famous hospital.

Lesley Herbertson, Senior Solicitor at PotterReesDolan, said:

This is a very sad case perhaps made even worse for the young boy’s mother by the fact that her son received treatment which she perceived would put him in danger even as it was administered.

Whether anti-coagulating the patient was appropriate, treatment will require careful consideration in the full context of circumstances of the case. The legal team will want to review all of the boy’s medical records and seek the opinion of independent experts on the relevant issues.

The boy's mother stated how she pleaded with the medical staff not to administer the blood thinner as she knew it would put his vital organs at risk.

She is now making a clinical negligence claims against the hospital.
