A medical technology company has improved arm and hand function in those tested with spinal cord injury.

ONWARD – which creates therapies to restore movement, independence and health in people with a spinal cord injury – has announced their study, called Up-LIFT, has improved upper limb strength and function as desired.

The study, which evaluated their ARC-EX Therapy, used non-invasive spinal cord stimulation technology to restore movement and other functions in those with disabilities.

Focussing on single-arm use, the Up-LIFT study was designed to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of electrical spinal cord stimulation to treat people with chronic tetraplegia.

From 14 centres across Europe, the USA and Canada, 65 participants enrolled to take part in the study with an average age of around 46 years and almost 6 years post-injury.

They were asked to complete 50 training sessions over four months with assessments to detect changes in their sensory and motor function of their upper limbs. Participants were also tested in their pinch and grasp force to determine whether meaningful changes were achieved using the therapy and standard rehabilitation.

Up-LIFT is the first large-scale clinical study of non-invasive spinal cord stimulation technology.

Dave Marver, ONWARD CEO said of the findings:

Our vision is to empower people with spinal cord injury to enjoy life in every way that matters to them. Today’s excellent results from the Up-LIFT study will help us transform that vision into reality. “Our team is working hard to prepare regulatory submissions and to get ready for launch in the U.S. and Europe. We are hopeful we can begin to positively impact the lives of people with spinal cord injury sometime during the second half of 2023.
