Country roads are the most dangerous roads according to new figures from the Department for Transport published today.
A new campaign from THINK! is encouraging drivers to brake before the bend on country roads, not on the bend.
Last year, three people died on country roads every day with a third of all 1,040 fatalities occurring on a bend in the road.
THINK! has teamed up with a farmer to turn potential road hazards into warning signs they claim are impossible to ignore.Almost a quarter of drivers surveyed admitted to braking too late on bends and 41% admitted to swerving to avoid something in the road.
These 'helpful hazards' see vehicles and animals [pictured] spray painted with signs to prompt drivers to slow down and brake before the bend.
Helen Shaw, Senior Litigation Manager at PotterReesDolan, said:
This campaign highlights some of the hidden dangers on rural roads, which can include farm vehicles, livestock, slurry etc. If you can't see around the bend, it is always better to exercise caution, slow down and be able to brake in time should there be unexpected hazards ahead.
