Two people died after incidents involving spinal surgery

Spinal surgery has been suspended due to four serious incidents at a North West hospital.

Two people died after 'medical complications' caused the incidents between March and August this year at Warrington and Halton NHS Trust.

The hospital has suspended all spinal procedures as a precautionary measure even though medical complications caused the incidents rather than a direct result of the spinal surgery.

Patients who were on the waiting list for surgery will be offered appointments elsewhere whilst the suspension is in place.

The hospital carries out 1,600 spinal procedures each year but all spinal surgery will be cancelled for the 'foreseeable future'.

Lesley Herbertson, senior clinical negligence solicitor at Potter Rees Dolan, said:

It is with great concern that we note that all spinal surgery has been suspended at Warrington Hospital. We have represented many people over the years who have been poorly treated at Warrington Hospital, including those receiving care from its spinal team.

However, a wholesale review of its spinal surgery services suggests a possible systemic issue which has had and could have major implications for the hospital’s spinal patients. Sadly, some patients have already been injured and died. Hopefully, the review will root out any existing problems and make the unit a safer place for surgery going forward

An investigation into the spinal surgery services at the hospital is due to take place next month.

Warrington and Halton NHS Trust has apologised to the patients and has promised to contact all patients affected by the operation cancellations.
