We had a pair of special visitors come to see us today; Deborah (who we know from SIA Merseyside) and her beautiful labradoodle Dillon.
Dog AID is an organisation which is on a mission - to empower the less able by supplying the dog owner with a trainer to help give them the knowledge and skills to train their pet dog to become a qualified Assistance Dog.
Dillon, who is still in training, showed off the skills he has learned to help his owner around the house including opening the washing machine, taking the washing out and closing the door behind him.
Things we do every day and take for granted are jobs that Assistance Dogs like Dillon are trained to help people who are in a wheelchair perhaps due to spinal cord injury.
He was also able to hunt down Deborah's mobile phone which was ringing somewhere in the office and bring it back to her.
And, if ever Deborah needs her medication, Dillon can fetch that for her, which he also demonstrated to us earlier.
I think you'll agree he's a very clever (and rather gorgeous) Assistance Dog.
Dog AID is totally reliant on support through donations so if you'd like to donate then please visit their website.
Helen Shaw, Senior Litigation Manager at PotterReesDolan and Secretary of SIA Merseyside Branch, said:
Deborah is a highly valued member of SIA Merseyside to include the excellent work that she does at the local SIC and when offering timely and pragmatic advice to individuals who have suffered a spinal cord injury. Dillon is equally close to our hearts!
