Woman with cerebral palsy prepares to sail across the Atlantic

A woman with cerebral palsy is preparing for a transatlantic sailing challenge.

Natasha Lambert, from the Isle of White, has quadriplegic athetoid cerebral palsy - a condition which affects her limbs and speech. Despite this, Natasha has been an avid sailor since the age of nine and is now preparing to sail cross the Atalntic Ocean in November, in what will be her biggest sailing challenge to date.

Natasha controls her boat - the MissIsle Too, an adapted 46ft catamaran - using a 'sip and puff control system' which allows her to control the vessel using her breath and tongue.

The system, designed and built by Gary Lambert in 2012, has proved to be extremely robust - taking MissIsle Too and Natasha around much of the coast of the British Isles. It is hoped that the system could be commercially manufactured and used in any sailing vessel that requires it.
