Woman found bandages inside her seven weeks after giving birth

A new mum was left horrified after discovering a large piece of decomposing material, believed to be bandages, inside her body seven weeks after giving birth.

Alexandra Loredana gave birth in January but started to complain to her midwife shortly afterwards about feeling uncomfortable.

She also noticed an unpleasant smell. However, her midwife reassured her everything was fine.

Ms Loredana remained concerned and booked an appointment to be seen by a doctor but she was not offered an appointment for over a week.

She felt brave enough to try and clean herself thoroughly whilst in the bath only to discover the decomposing material.

The hospital Trust responsible for Ms Loredana’s care have indicated that they will now begin an investigation into what happened.

Hannah Bottomley, clinical negligence solicitor commented:

There are certain actions which the NHS describes as “never events”, these are essentially errors which should never have been allowed to happen and include things such as leaving bandages etc in wounds.

It sounds to me very much that this might be described as a “never event” and I hope that the hospital conduct a proper investigation in order to establish how exactly this happened.
