Today is World Mental Health Day.

Mental Health problems can affect us at any time of life. The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that 75% of mental health problems are established by the age of 24 and many people with problems do not receive the help that they need: WHO states that the majority of people over 65 with depression receive no help at all from the NHS.

Perhaps this is because talking about mental health problems is still seen as taboo amongst many people, but there are also issues with poor funding of mental health services and, in some case, poor standards of care.

We are being encouraged by the Mental Health Foundation (MHF) to educate each other and raise awareness of mental health issues. It is important that we take the time to recognise when those close to us are struggling, but also offer friendship and support to those who do not have the benefit of friends and family around them.

Depression and anxiety can sometimes result in self-harm and suicide. Whilst it can happen at any age, suicide is currently the most common form of death for men aged between 20-49 years in England and Wales.

It is generally accepted that NHS Mental Health services need more funding, but there are also occasions where the standard of care is poor and a vulnerable person has not received the protection they need from our health service during a period when they are at real and immediate risk of suicide. Where this happens, an inquest can sometimes provide answers to what may have gone wrong; and in some cases a civil claim for compensation may arise. One such case was Rabone v Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust.

World Mental Health Day is a much needed reminder to us all to look out for one another. You may be interested to read The Mental Health Foundation’s ten tips to looking after your own mental health:
