A new USA study has found that wearing a bicycle helmet significantly reduces the risk of a serious brain injury and death after a crash.
After analysing medical records of more than 6,200 people who had suffered a traumatic brain injury as a cyclist, researchers found that just over a quarter of those cyclists were wearing helmets.
The study from the University of Arizona found those without a helmet were 58% less likely to have a severe brain injury.
Doctors conducting the study also found cyclists wearing a helmet were less likely to die, require surgery to remove part of the skull and suffer facial fractures.
Hugh Potter, Partner at PotterReesDolan, said:
This is really important. Wearing a helmet gives us cyclists protection against having a brain bleed and also increases our chances of recovery if we do have a brain bleed. Maybe the only question is what type of helmet we should wear?
The doctors said how this findings from this study show the importance of promoting helmet use and developing stricter helmet laws as well as creating better helmets.
