Maternity training to reduce number of mother and baby birth injuries

Baby Lifeline has been fighting for years to obtain government support to enable staff from maternity units to access training to improve standards. Their excellent new report Mind the Gap identifies the gaps in training and the areas they highlight come as no surprise to me given the repeated errors we see in clinical negligence cases.

New blood test can diagnose sepsis much faster than before

The new sepsis test, known as the BacCapSeq platform, screens for 307 known disease-causing bacteria as well as antibiotic resistance.

Women are being denied their right to choose a Caesarean

The focus on the NICE guidelines, as highlighted in this article, is on a woman being given all of the necessary information and then being allowed to make an informed decision about what is the best mode of delivery for her. Informed decisions are the backbone of our consenting process and it is shocking that women all over the country and are being denied the opportunity to make an informed decision about their own care.

Number of sepsis deaths in hospitals has increased

The number of patients who died from sepsis has risen by more than a third in two years. NHS England said the reason for this was that more patients were being diagnosed with sepsis than ever before as they are taking sepsis 'incredibly seriously.

'Never Events' blunders increased in Manchester hospitals

Since February this year, there were seven Never Events recorded in Greater Manchester which could have caused the patient 'serious harm or death'. 'Never Events' included the wrong body part being operated on and objects being left inside patients such as wires, swabs or bandages and 'specimen retrieval bags'.
